No matter where you may put your foot down in the most remote areas of the southwest, you can be certain that someone passed that way before.  The Apache inhabited this country in more recent history, but it was likely the Jornada/Mogollon or Mimbres  cultures who lived here 600 to 1,000 years ago that carved this footstep into this rough sandstone escarpment in the Chihuahuan Desert of Southern New Mexico.
