It was a pleasure to observe this grizzly grazing alone for the first time in her young life. She's three years old this year and newly separated from her mother and sibling. There were three cubs in her litter when I photographed them soon after they emerged from the den a couple of springs ago. It seems that two of them have survived to reach the age of sub-adulthood and now have a chance to make it on their own. It's been a joy to be able to see and identify bears who I've come to know and recognize over the years that I've been watching and photographing them. Seeing beautiful young bears like this one gives me hope for the future of endangered wildlife. And I remain grateful to the many people and organizations who do all they can to protect them.
