Clearing storm over Mt. Timpanogos. Wasatch Mountains, Utah. March 15, 2014. The story behind the photograph: Saturday dawned cool and cloudy with strong north winds. The fast moving storm that pounded us with rain and snow overnight was beginning to lift so I ventured out to a favorite vantage point hoping for a glimpse of Mt. Timp through breaking clouds. Biting gusts of wind threatened to topple the tripod making it challenging to steady the camera for the shot. The mountain was at least 12-15 miles away so I used a heavy 200mm lens to bring it in as close as possible. Steadying a long lens is critical for a sharp image. Clouds raced across the summit and as the sun clipped the peak, a brief lull in the wind created a narrow window of opportunity. I let go of the tripod, held the shutter release with my right hand and placed a graduated neutral density filter over the lens with my left hand. I was able to make several crisp frames before the wind lashed once again shutting down my operation.
