At 10,900 feet near the top of the Roaring Fork Valley east of Aspen, you'll find the ghost town of Independence. Think gold strike in on July 4, 1879 (thus the name), miners, boom and bust, lightening and avalanches, callused hands, gun play, whiskey and... I could go on. As I walked among these weathered structures on the national historic register, I wondering about what life was like for those who settled here, died here, struck it rich; and those who went bust and moved on to seek their fortune at the next strike.
