A member of the Wapiti Lake Pack blends with the forest along the upper reaches of Obsidian Creek in Yellowstone. The Wapitis have been well north and west of their typical range in Yellowstone's interior and seem to be thriving while feeding on winter-locked bison and elk. It was a privilege to watch members of the pack for a couple of hours on Thursday morning as they took turns feeding on a nearby bull elk carcass. A rare and intimate encounter with wolves and something I will not soon forget, and may never experience again. January 2018.
