Rising Above the Mist. The Grand Teton rises through mist and fog on a sub-zero January morning along the Snake River in Teton National Park. As a lover of nature, this was one of "those" moments. I had wanted to photograph this location for some time, and finally seized the opportunity last Sunday. Snowshoeing along the river's edge through deep snow in pitch-black using my headlamp, I heard the unmistakable slap of a beaver's tail against the icy waters of the Snake signaling a warning that I was now in its territory. I found a place in thick willows and set up my camera to align the mountain reflection in the water and waited for the light. As the first rays of sun touched the 13,700 foot summit of the Grand, a long, deep howl rose from the timber across the river, followed by several more. Goose bumps covered my body as I realized that I was now in the presence of wolves. I remained still, hoping they would move into sight. And while they did not reveal themselves, knowing they were close was an absolute thrill. As a nature photographer, it's easy to become consumed with getting "the image" and it's wonderful to be reminded that the greatest reward is the privilege of bearing witness to wilderness and wild places. May it always be that way. « less
