I had the good fortune of watching this red fox a few days ago as it hunted for voles and mice in the Wyoming forest. By the amount of snow on the ground and the rich winter coat that remains on the fox, it's hard to tell that this it's early May and not January in Teton country. One hint of spring is the tell-tale tuft of soft pelage along the back of the fox which indicates that its winter coat is beginning to shed excess insulation in favor of a lighter layer for the warmer days ahead.
